Costa Rica Shopping

The local currency in Costa Rica is colones, but you will find that in some of the major tourist shopping areas they not only accept, but expect dollars, such La Fortuna downtown or many stalls along the beaches. In many areas which cater to tourists you can pay with either, but don't expect to be able to do this for any bus fare, or in San Jose or Alajuela (the city where the San Jose Airport is located).

The most common souvenirs are made of wood, and although many of these are very beautiful, nearly all of them are contributing the deforestation of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama. Unless you see wood that is marked as responsible or plantation grown it most likely came from a forest.

Costa Rica Shopping

With the freedom to explore your destination in Costa Rica rental car you can visit the local feria. Here you will find all the best local produce. Try the many fresh tropical fruits, some of which are sure to be completely new to you. This is also the place to buy local farm-fresh eggs, cow or goat milk, meats and fish, and even random household items and fashion accessories. Most towns have at least one feria per week.
